I admit to a fascination for Martha's Vineyard. I have enjoyed other author's writings that, although characters and story are fictional,used the island as a back drop for their story. Having visited only once, this book was another chance to visit, and.... Bonus! These are true stories. I read the 20 th anniversary edition of Haunted Island. The original was the 2nd best selling book in an island bookstore in the 90's, the most frequently stolen book from the high school library, and is still kept on many a guest room night stand. The 20 th anniversary edition includes some new stories as well as updates on the originals. Holly Nadler, a long time island resident, and an admitted " ghost magnet" led walking ghost tours on the island for 16 years. This book will take you on an armchair tour of one of the most haunted places in New England, to the two most ghost packed lanes, and " ground zero" for hauntings on the island. A few of my favorite stories include the ghost of a woman named Desire with a passion for music, a ghost pacified into letting the residents sleep by leaving him a bottle of Jack Daniels and a shot glass at the bottom of the stairs, and Holly's own personal story. This book did not fail to hold my attention and Holly's humor allows you to laugh while being scared. I thoroughly enjoyed this trip to Martha's Vineyard.
