Description

A year-round escape for one million annual tourists, Catalina Island is gaining popularity as a world-class eco-destination. Eighty-eight percent of the island is under the watch of the Catalina Island Conservancy, which preserves, manages and restores the island's unique wild lands. Bison, foxes and bald eagles are its best-known inhabitants, but Catalina is home to more than sixty other animal and plant species that exist nowhere else on earth. And they are all within the boundaries of one of the world's most populous regions: Los Angeles County. Biologists Frank Hein and Carlos de la Rosa present a highly enjoyable tour through the fascinating origins, mysterious quirks and ecological victories of one of the West Coast's most remarkable places.

As part of the UC California Naturalist class, I went on a day-long geology tour provided by the Catalina Island Conservancy. As we passed the Conservancy's headquarters, our guide said, "This is where the magic happens." That intrigued me to find out more about Catalina when I got home, and browsing around on Amazon, I came across this amazing book. (That I think should have been part of our required reading for the class!). This is NOT droning on natural history facts. Written by two top-notch wildlife biologists, who are also guitar players, the "voice" of this book is so engaging, insightful, inspiring, heart-felt...I just loved their writing voices. This is not merely a Catalina guidebook, it presents the vision and framework for how a healthy ecology is necessary to a healthy human economy...and then tells about how this has been accomplished on Catalina, as an inspiration to take the lessons home to wherever one lives. And like our guide said, what has been accomplished on that Island is magical.
