Other reviewers have noted most of the salient aspects of the plot of the story. I just want to recommend it to potential buyers for the old fashioned, understated style. Toward that end, I'll note that, to me, the single funniest moment of the film was not the result of a single word of dialog or outlandish bit of physical comedy. It was just a slow camera pan from one previously disagreeable character to an empty glass. They wouldn't make the movie that way today. And it wouldn't be better.
